The British Orthodontic Society have launched the first ever app with the potential to aid IOTN classification for dental professionals and students
The resource has been developed to help improve the standard and accuracy of orthodontic referrals as well as support and inform the training of undergraduates and foundation dentists.
Easy IOTN
The new app, named Easy IOTN, guides the user to the correct classification via the quickest possible route, using simple clinical features. The app can be downloaded now for free through the Apple app store and will be available for Android phones in the New Year.
Traditionally, IOTN is recognised as potentially complex which has led to it being applied incorrectly. With increased emphasis on reducing referrals for those patients who do not qualify for NHS treatment, the timing of this product launch is ideal. Also included in the app is a CPD and training section which will provide one hour of verifiable CPD for the user.
The app was launched at the BOC conference which was held in Brighton last week. Speaking at the press launch at, Guy Deeming, who has led the development along with Professor Susan Cunningham, said: ‘We wanted to simplify and streamline the scoring process as well as support the training of dentists. This is no substitute for calibration but we hope it will be a useful adjunct for dentists.’
Professor Cunningham commented: ‘The role of the BOS is to advance the science and practice of orthodontics to benefit patients and that’s what we hope this app will achieve. Additionally, this is a resource for the whole dental team which we hope will ensure that patients are on the correct clinical pathway.’
