This month dental technician Andrea Johnson talks about Linkin Park and trekking the Sahara.
1. What motivated you to pursue a career in the lab tech world?
After having worked in retail management for many years and quite frankly had enough of the bad hours, bad pay and very little job satisfaction. I was therefore ready for a complete career change. However I required a job that provided training while working due to my life and family commitments. I looked in the local papers and found a little laboratory around the corner from me that offered on the job training with day release. I found myself fascinated by what I saw in the lab and although slightly intimidated with the idea of returning to studying as a mature student I threw myself into it and have never looked back.
2. Tell us what you like most about being a dental technician?
I like the problem solving, the challenge that each unique case provides me with. I also love being part of a team that puts the patients first.
3. Is there a career path that you would have chosen if you hadn’t pursued technical work?
I have tried many job roles in my lifetime. I started working at 13 with a paper round and have had jobs such as packer, overlock and lockstitch machinist, time and motion practitioner, various retail jobs, and even did a milk round for a few days. Whatever I do, in whatever industry, I always end up in management roles because I am a natural organiser and motivator.
