
David Cox, practice principal and co-founder of Cox & Hitchcock Dental Group, tells us why only the best is good enough when it comes to practice refurbishment.
I became the Principal of Llanthewy Dental Practice in Newport, Gwent in 1995. It was then a predominately NHS practice with two surgeries and only a small patient base. Following the opening of a second squat practice in Cardiff a few years later, my business partner Robert Hitchcock joined me. We went on from then to form the Cox & Hitchcock Dental Group.
Our group currently consists of three practices, so dealing with practice refurbishment is nothing new to us. Our Cardiff practice was our first big refurbishment project around eight years ago. Followed by our second Newport practice that focuses more on NHS treatment and primary care.
The practice
We had been looking to renovate the Llanthewy Road practice for some time. Then by chance the property next door to the practice came onto the market. This was the ideal opportunity not just to double the size of the practice but also to introduce more private treatment options for our patients. We could also expand our dental implant and referral business with a purpose-built implant surgery.
There would certainly be a lot of hard work ahead to transform a suite of fairly run-down offices into a state-of-the-art clinical environment. It would need to conform to all the necessary regulations and provide the best possible environment to service our patients. However, with the right help we knew we could make this work. With our offer accepted, we finally purchased the property in May 2016.
