It was originally developed in 2008 by researchers, clinicians and academics to help record tooth wear. Since then clinicians widely adopt the tool to record erosive tooth wear in general practice.
To use the BEWE, simply go through each sextant, measuring the surface with the greatest amount of wear. This will create a cumulative score. This score gives an indication of how much tooth wear is present in the mouth.
- 0 – no wear
- 1 – early damage to the teeth. Initial loss of enamel
- 2 – less than 50%. Distinct defect, hard tissue loss <50% of the surface area
- 3 – greater than 50%. Hard tissue loss >50% of the surface area.
