The Digital and Implant Dentistry Show – what’s on at the Implant Theatre?

With less than a month to go until the Digital and Implant Dentistry Show, here we take a deep dive into the Implant Theatre.

On Saturday 25 February, the Digital and Implant Dentistry is taking place at Novotel London West.

This completely free event offers cutting edge lectures from digital and implant dentistry specialists and the opportunity to meet hundreds of leading brands.

In addition, you will be able to explore the latest topics, advancements and technology in digital and implant dentistry and come-face-face with leading clinicians in the profession.

The Implant Theatre

The Implant Theatre at the Digital and Implant Dentistry Show will focus on talks surrounding implant related systems, equipment, consumables, training, services and products tailored for implant dentists and lab technicians.

Alfonso Rao – Predictable guided bone regeneration

Born in Italy, Dr Alfonso Rao graduated from the University of Chieti with distinction. He has spent three years at the Eastman Dental Institute of London, where he completed a diploma in implant dentistry.

Over the last few years, Alfonso has dedicated a lot of time in teaching and mentoring dentists in implant dentistry. He is also an opinion leader and speaker for Straumann, Geistlich and many other companies.

On his lecture, Alfonso said: ‘Guide Bone Regeneration (GBR) techniques are one of the most common techniques that we use in implant dentistry.

‘This introduction lecture focuses on patient selection, diagnosis, and treatment planning for grafting procedures.’

Cemal Ucer – Applications of digital dentistry in oral and maxillofacial surgery and implant dentistry – sponsored by ICE

Cemal Ucer, a specialist oral surgeon, graduated from Manchester Dental School in 1982.

He established a private hospital referral practice for implant dentistry in 1988. He was also awarded one of the first MSc certificates in implant dentistry in the UK in 1995.

Cemal said: ‘This lecture will discuss the application of digital dentistry in oral and maxillofacial and implant dentistry, focusing particularly on the treatment of edentulism and severely atrophic jaw.

‘Innovative applications of digital dentistry ,such as customised bone graft and patient specific 3D printed implants, will also be discussed.’

Claire McCarthy – Supportive implant therapy – lights, camera, action!

Claire McCarthy is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin. She is currently a clinical research fellow at Kings College London’s faculty of dentistry, oral and craniofacial Sciences. 

Her research areas include non-surgical instrumentation, ultrasonic devices, bio-aerosols, and implant surface decontamination.

‘In this session we will examine the three elements of supportive implant therapy and how best to clinically manage early peri-implant complications, together with a strategic approach to improve adherence to self-care and recall intervals.

‘I will discuss the key aspects of implant examination, professional mechanical plaque removal from titanium surfaces and prostheses, and explore the role of the patient in disease prevention and treatment.’

Craig Mallorie – The A to Z of restoring a single implant crown for the GDP

Dr Craig Mallorie is a dental surgeon based in Wales, UK. His practising week is exclusively focused on providing oral surgery and dental implant care via his peripatetic service known as ‘South Wales Oral Surgery’.

He graduated from Cardiff Dental School in the UK in 2006 and was awarded the prize for oral surgery.

In addition, he is currently the Welsh representative for the British Association of Oral Surgeons.

Craig’s lecture will provide a start to finish explanation of how to restore a straightforward single dental implant to provide the GDP the knowledge to begin their restorative journey with dental implants.

Doug Watt – Restoratively driven digital implant planning: starting with the end in mind – sponsored by 3shape

Doug graduated from Birmingham University in 2003. In 2008 and 2009 he completed two year long restorative dentistry courses with Tipton Training in Manchester and following this was awarded the Tipton training practical restorative dentist of the year award in 2009.

Doug hopes attendees take away from his lecture:

  • Utilising a 3D digital scan to make a crown that fits based on the patient’s existing dentition and opposing occlusion 
  • Aligning an intraoral scan with a CT scan to allow a visualisation of 3D anatomical features 
  • Virtually placing an implant in a correct position and the avoidance of anatomy defects 
  • How a surgical guide can be designed and manufactured by 3D printing in order to accurately place the implant.

Naveed Maan – How to start the implant journey

Naveed has worked as a GDP for the past 21 years – within the NHS framework for 12 years and private environment for the past nine years.

He qualified in 2002 with a BDS from Guy’s Hospital and has a MA in restorative and aesthetic dentistry from Manchester. He has also received a diploma in implant dentistry (advanced certificate) from the Royal college of Surgeons, England. 

On his lecture, Naveed said: ‘This lecture will provide an overview of the indications and contraindications for dental implant placement and the importance of proper patient selection and evaluation.

‘I will teach participants the surgical techniques involved in dental implant placement and the use of proper instruments and equipment.

‘It will also explore the post-operative care and management of dental implant patients and the importance of proper follow-up and monitoring for potential complications’.

Nilesh Parmar – How having an MBA has changed my career – sponsored by Pearl

Dr Nilesh Parmar has a special interest in implant dentistry and dental sedation for nervous patients. He currently successfully splits his time between his seven-surgery practice in Southend-On-Sea and a multi-disciplinary practice in Blackheath.

Nilesh said: ‘In this presentation I will go through what was involved in my executive MBA from Imperial University and relate it to my everyday work as a dentist.’

The learning aims of the lecture include:

  • Understanding what an MBA is
  • Entrance requirements
  • How it’s helped Nilesh in my dental career.

Ross Walker – A new approach to oral hygiene that affects patients outcomes
