Back and better than ever, this year’s South West Dentistry Show will have a theatre dedicated to GDC recommended CPD topics – find out what it will have in store.
Back by popular demand, the South West Dentistry Show is taking place on 1 July 2023 at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.
The show is set to be even better than before after two very successful runs.
Once again, FMC is bringing an outstanding line-up of talks by leading clinicians and industry experts to the south west. The lectures will be covering every topic in dentistry, from facial aesthetics to buying and selling a practice.
And best of all, this completely free event has hours of CPD on offer. Each lecture at the show is CPD-verified, so all you have to do is scan on the day and the certificates will be available on your Dentistry Club account.
While free, registration is essential – click here to save your place.
The CPD Theatre
For the first time, the South West Dentistry Show has a dedicated recommended CPD theatre. This will make those mandatory hours of recommended CPD just fly by!
These topics are medical emergencies, complaints handling, and oral cancer: early detection.
Have a look at the lecture line up…
Oral cancer: early detection
Jocelyn Harding – Mouth cancer: ‘Lets talk’ – sponsored by Mouth Cancer Foundation (one hour)
Jocelyn started her dental career in the Royal Navy in 1987, qualifying as a dental hygienist in 1992. She has been part of the team working at Confident Dental and Implant Clinic in Stroud, Gloucestershire, since 2007.
In addition, she is a clinical ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and part of the working party updating government guidelines in the prevention and early detection of mouth cancer.
This lecture aims to help the dental team understand the journey of a patient living with head and neck cancer, the role of the dental team during this journey, and how mouth care is pivotal for their ongoing health.
Jocelyn said: ‘One person every three hours is lost to mouth cancer. 8,864 people in the UK were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year, and 3,034 people in the UK lost their life to mouth cancer.
‘As the statistics of diagnosis are increasing, we will meet and care for these patients more frequently.’
Medical emergencies
Ian Corbett – Medical emergencies in the dental practice (two hours)
With over 20 years’ experience, Ian is an NHS consultant oral surgeon with a private practice covering the north of England, specialising in paediatric oral surgery and advanced sedation.
Ian has a research interest in local anaesthesia having published extensively and lectured internationally. He is also a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Oral Surgery and a council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The lecture will cover two hours of medical emergencies CPD activity as recommend by the GDC as part of the required 10 hours per cycle.
Ian will cover:
- Common medical emergencies in the dental practice
- Identifying the ill patient
- Recommended emergency equipment and drugs
- Awareness of the importance of early intervention
- Understanding of the primary management of medical emergencies
- The role of the dental team in medical emergencies.
Complaints handling
Lesley Taylor – Resolving complaints – sponsored by the DDU (one hour)
Lesley qualified from Cardiff in 1991, and has since worked mostly in general dental practice – both NHS and private.
She has also worked in the community and hospital dental services, as well as in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
In addition, Lesley completed a postgraduate diploma, a certificate in medical education, and a masters in law. She then joined the DDU in 2016 as a dentolegal adviser.
Lesley’s lecture will explore the reasons behind complaints and the patient as a consumer. It will also look at the dental team’s ethical obligations, the guidelines and how you might respond to complaints to reduce the risk of justifiable criticism.
Lesley hopes to:
- Review the reasons why patients complain
- Highlight the different procedures for handling NHS and private complaints
- Explain the GDC expectations with regard to complaint handling.
